How to Choose the Best Crown Material For Your Patient?

Emax Layered: Most esthetic given an ideal stump shade, but the weakest. Recommended for anterior region & bicuspids. Will not cover dark stumps!

Emax Press: Esthetic but weak. Recommended for anterior region & bicuspids. Will not cover dark stumps!

Translucent Zirconia (“Bruxzir Anterior”): Esthetic, full contour, but very (gray) translucent. Recommended for anteriors or premolars, but no more than 3 units for bridgework. May not hide dark stumps!

Lava: Esthetic and strong. Zirconia coping with hand-stacked porcelain on all surfaces. Can be used in all areas whether bridges or single units and hides dark stumps very well!

Layered Zirconia: Best choice for many patients, but especially those needing or requesting our chairside custom stain & glaze service. Can be used in all areas due to its strength and esthetics. This material masks dark stump shades very well, whether a traditional prep or an implant!

Premium Bruxzir: Not as esthetic as a layered zirconia crown due to its lacking of hand-stacked porcelain, but it is a strong, dependable material with a transition of rich cervical color to translucent incisal/buccal edge. Recommended for bicuspids and posteriors, but can also be used in the anterior region.

Economy Bruxzir: Least esthetic but very strong. Naturally a monochromatic material but a great cost-effective option! Recommended in the posterior region.

How To Scan for A Crown When Patient Has An Existing Partial Denture?

Pre-op Scan*:

  • Option 1: Scan pre-op tooth without the partial in place- with this we can mimic the existing tooth exactly. A full arch is preferred.

OR

  • Option 2: Scan the prepped tooth with partial in place, capturing the clasp arms and rest seats in detail. A full arch is preferred.

*If you would like to send both of the pre-op options, please create a new case and send as an additional scan.

*The pre-op cannot be the original tooth with the partial in place, as it does not give us clasp depth or accurate contact representation

Prep Scan**:

  • Scan prepped tooth without partial denture in place. A full arch is preferred.
  • Scan opposing
  • Scan bite

**We need the prepped scan to be without the partial in place.

How To Take a PVS Impression when the patient has an existing partial denture?

For the best results, we ask that you include the following in full arch impressions:

  • Prep arch with the partial in place (pick up impression for the correct placement of the partial on the prep)
  • Prep arch without the partial in place (this can be a quarter arch or triple tray-for an accurate impression of the margin)
  • Bite registration with the partial
  • Bite registration without the partial
  • Opposing arch

Option 1: Ideally, we request to have the partial in our possession while fabricating their restoration. This will ensure the most accurate product. If the patient cannot go without their partial for the duration of crown fabrication, then we request we keep the partial for a full working day in the lab. We will fabricate a resin clasp to replicate the rest(s) and clasp(s) of the partial. Please refer to the bullet points above for case contents and note on the prescription if the partial is to be returned after a day in the lab.

Option 2: If the patient cannot go without the partial, please include the following:

  • All bullet points listed above for PVS impressions
  • Index of partial ○ Seat partial after prep, inject light body around prep and capture rest seats and/or clasp arms

I Have A Patient With A Difficult Shade. What Do I do?

Not to worry! Simply give us a call before the prep appointment day so we can arrange to take a custom shade match. If the color still isn’t quite perfect, we can schedule an in-office custom stain and glaze appointment to fine-tune the shade and ensure a flawless match.

I am a patient and have a denture that needs to be fixed. Can I get it done at your lab?

Unfortunately, we are not able to see patients without directions from a licensed dentist. By law, a dental laboratory cannot work directly on patients without the supervision of a dentist. However, if you do not have a dentist, we would be happy to send you a referral! Give us a call during our office hours.
